Putting
Brain First. AI Second.
into Practice
Try a Demo
These are demo GPTs currently being tested and refined with real students. For school partnerships, all AI learning environments are custom-built and co-designed to align with your curriculum, teaching philosophy, and safeguarding needs.
Welcome to the BetterDegree.AI Socratic Learning GPTs, study partners designed to help you think, not just get answers. They work like a guided reasoning coach: instead of telling you what’s right, they ask structured questions that help you build the explanation yourself.
They isolate the concept a learner is stuck on, remove the noise, and maximise learning through guided questioning that keeps effort focused where it matters. Every response demands generative thinking, retrieval practice, and reflection. Replicating the same feedback loop that underpins the BetterDegree.AI system itself.
Each GPT includes a Socratic Hint Tutor for step-by-step reasoning, a flagship Socratic–Feynman Questioning mode for deeper explanation, and built-in checkpoints with On-Demand Summaries (ODS) for reflective learning. Explore them in more detail ↓
They Can…
Explain concepts through questioning
“Help me understand why gravitational potential increases with height.”
Guide you through problems
“Let’s try this force question step by step.”
Test your understanding
“Can you quiz me on momentum with three Socratic questions?”
Summarise your progress
“Make a summary table based on my understanding and what I’m less clear on.”
→ You’ll get an on-demand summary showing what you’ve understood and what still feels unclear.
Example: How to Use It in Practice
1. Start with a problem you’re working on.
Upload or paste the question, for example:
“Two trolleys collide and stick together. Calculate their final velocity.”
2. Enter Hints Mode.
Say: “Let’s use Hints mode to solve this.” (In practise the GPT will automatically go into hints mode when you upload a question.)
The GPT will break it into steps, nudging you with prompts like:
“What quantity connects the two masses before and after collision?”
3. When you’ve reached your answer… switch gears.
Say: “Now switch to Socratic-Feynman mode.”
It’ll move into deeper questions like:
“Why is momentum conserved here but not kinetic energy?”
“What assumption lets this hold true?”
4. Finish with a reflection.
Ask: “Can you summarise my understanding in a short table?”
You’ll get an ODS summary showing what you’ve grasped, what needs review, and a few next-step prompts.
Tips & Tricks
One-question rule: It only asks one question per turn, that’s deliberate. It stops overload and forces active recall.
Switch modes at any time: The GPTs will respond to behavioural cues and may suggest switching between hinting and deeper Socratic-Feynman questioning at time when it feels it would be beneficial to you as the learner. However, at any time you can explicitly ask to swap modes, simply say something like:
“Let’s move to Hints.”
“Switch to Socratic-Feynman mode.
The GPT confirms the change and sticks to that mode for a few turns before switching again (to keep the flow natural).
Mode memory: Once you switch, it stays there for at least two turns to avoid jittery back-and-forths.
Summarise anytime: Typing “summary” or “ODS please” triggers a short reflection table.
Safe challenge: If it pushes too far, just say “pause” or “recap please.”
Study partner mindset: Treat it like explaining to a classmate. It listens, challenges, and mirrors your logic.
Potential Reactions
You might think… What’s actually happening
“It’s not answering me.” Correct, it’s waiting for your reasoning.
“It’s moving slowly.” It’s designed to ask one question per turn so your brain does the work and you avoid cognitive overload.
“It’s repeating my answer.” That’s reflection, it restates your reasoning before questioning it.
“It feels like it’s testing me.” That’s the point, you’re practising retrieval and explanation.
